Knotgrass, Flittle, and Thistlewit are pixies that inhabit the Moors. The trio went to Princess Aurora's Christening to grant her magical gifts, where Maleficent curses the newborn baby. After this event, the pixies were responsible for taking care of Aurora until her sixteenth birthday and are her adoptive aunts.
Knotgrass is played by Imelda Staunton, Flittle is played by Lesley Manville, and Thistlewit is played by Juno Temple.
Physical Appearances[]
Knotgrass is the oldest, plump, has brown hair, and is wearing a red dress and hat.
Flittle was the pixie that had short brown hair, in curls with blue ends and was wearing a blue dress.
Thistlewit is the youngest out of the three. She has blonde hair, and a green dress and hat with yellow and white tips.
Personalities[]
Knotgrass is quite stern and strict, but she does have a sweet and kinder maternal side as well.
Thistlewit is a cheerful fairy and sometimes speaks without thinking (such as when the fairies were preparing for Phillip's proposal for Aurora and she almost ruined the surprise).
Flittle is softer in regard to Knotgrass' personality but is more or less the same. She is also very selfless, willingly sacrificing herself for the magical creatures when facing Lady Gerda.
Although they all meant well, the pixies were completely incapable of watching after Aurora, as they were more concerned with blending in as humans to actually do the task of watching over Aurora and had little to no knowledge of caring for a human child.
Origin[]
Early Lives[]
The Pixies' origin isn't revealed, but it's possible that they originated from the Moors.
Maleficent[]
One day in the Moors, a human thief was found at the pool of jewels. Knotgrass, Flittle and Thistlewit were discussing about this with other fairies, shortly after, a young Maleficent appeared and asked what they were talking about, the trio then discussed who should tell Maleficent first, but Thistlewit ended up telling her what happened. Years later, the pixies went to Aurora's christening, the newborn baby, daughter of King Stefan.
At first, Stefan doesn't get well their arrival, but Queen Leila, along with the three pixies, convinced Stefan to let the pixies grant magical gifts to the baby. Knotgrass wishes for Aurora the gift of beauty, Flittle wishes Aurora's life to have happiness in all its days, but when Thistlewit is about to wish her gift, Maleficent shows up. When she also decides to bestow a gift on the child, the pixies become alert, telling Maleficent to stay away from the princess. Using her magical powers, Maleficent throws the trio away, making them fall inside of a box. The trio watches when Maleficent starts to cast a curse on Princess Aurora.
In order to protect Aurora from the curse, Stefan gives the baby to the care of the three pixies. Thereafter, Knotgrass, Flittle, Thistlewit and baby Aurora move into a small cottage. Seeing that they cannot be in fairy form to take care of Aurora, they then decide to transform into human form. However, it turns out that they are incapable of looking after the baby so while they struggle living like humans, Maleficent and Diaval secretly take care of the princess from a distance.
At this time Maleficent pranks the three Pixies to kill her boredom. While Aurora cares for them and considers them her aunts, she does not view the Pixies in the same maternal and primary caregiver light as she does Maleficent, mainly due to Maleficent being the one actually watching over her because of the Pixies' negligence. Years pass, and Aurora grows into a teenager, with the day of her curse nearing, and the Pixies celebrate being able to finally return to their original forms once the curse is over, still obviously struggling with passing off as human. However, when Aurora reveals she wants to live in the Moors with Maleficent, the Pixies (mainly Knotgrass) are shocked and infuriated with the decision, refusing to let their struggling efforts to "raise" her be for naught, unintentionally revealing Aurora's biography and Maleficent's identity.
Unknown to the Pixies, this ends up tearing a rift between Maleficent and Aurora, the latter of whom is angry at the dark fairy for keeping this a secret. Now with the secret out, the Pixies bring Aurora back to her kingdom a day ahead of schedule. causing a furious King Stefan to berate them for failing their duty. Under Stefan's orders, the Pixies lock Aurora in her room to protect her from the curse. Unfortunately, the curse inevitably takes effect on Aurora, despite the efforts of the Pixies.
Having failed to do their duty, the Pixies surrender in defeat, but soon come up with the idea for Prince Philip to kiss Aurora when they recall "true-love's kiss," the only way to break Maleficent's curse. They coerce him to kiss her sleeping body and Philip obliges. However, the attempt fails, due to Aurora and Philip's relationship still being in the early stages of attraction rather than true love, and the Pixies; leave to find another suitor, allowing Maleficent to enter the room once they leave, and in an unexpected turn of events, she awakens Aurora with a kiss on the forehead, for her motherly feelings for Aurora is a true kind of love. The Pixies celebrate in the end and come to honor Aurora as the new Queen of the Moors.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil[]
The Three Fairies cheer with excitement as Prince Phillip proposes to Aurora. Later, they and all the residents of the Moors are invited to the wedding. They get trapped in the chapel and are attacked with red iron dust released by Lady Gerda that strips the creatures of their magic and sentience. Flittle sacrifices herself by going inside the organ and stopping the flow of dust. Once she dies, Knotgrass and Thistlewit avenge her death by making Gerda fall to her presumed death when she tries to get the organ working again.
At the wedding, Knotgrass and Thistlewit argue over what the color of Aurora's wedding dress should be and keep changing it between pink and green. When the dress turns blue, they turn to a regenerating Flittle, telling her they like that color.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Magic: The Pixies possesses several magical powers:
- Flight: Through their wings, the Pixies are able to defy gravity and fly, and they were shown to maneuver adroitly through the air.
- Blessing Inducement: In order to spread peace, the Pixies went to the baby Aurora's christening and granted her magical gifts. Knotgrass wished for the baby the gift of beauty, Flittle wished that every day of her life would be filled with happiness, but when Thistlewhit was about to grant Aurora's gift, Maleficent came and interrupted her. Thistlewit's gift was that she would find true love, but she didn't have enough time to grant it.
- Shapeshifting: When King Stefan entrusted Aurora's safety to the Pixies, they saw that they needed a proper disguise, so the three fairies used their magical powers and turned themselves into humans.
- Atmokinesis: It's presumed that the Pixies have this ability because when Maleficent used her magical powers to cause a downpour in the three Pixies' house, Knotgrass, while raining in their house, told Flittle and Thistlewit to stop causing the downpour, unaware that Maleficent was doing it.
- Color-Manipulation: As demonstrated during their for Aurora's wedding, the Pixies had the ability to manipulate colors - At the wedding, Knotgrass and Thistlewit argue over the color of Aurora's wedding dress and keep changing it between pink and green. When the dress turns blue, they turn to a regenerating Flittle telling her how they like the color.
